CLEVELAND, Ohio – Jelena Sever scored both goals to lead the Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Cleveland State Wednesday afternoon at the Krenzler Bubble.
"Very happy with a good win on the road against a quality Cleveland State team," head coach
Troy Fabiano said. "The energy on the field and bench was contagious and the response from the team was great after last week's loss."
The Panthers (4-1) led 1-0 at the break before the Vikings (3-3) brought it back to level on a penalty kick in the 54
th minute. Sever found the back of the net again at the 68:35 mark to provide the winner.
"The response after giving up a penalty kick early in the second half was big-time," Fabiano said. "Being on the road and giving up a PK, a lot of teams can fold in that situation. They didn't put their heads down and the fact that we were able to get another goal in regulation speaks volumes to the character and drive this team has."
Sever broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 17
th minute. Her free kick from the top of the 18 was a beauty, skimming the left post and into the net for her second goal of the season.
That 1-0 lead held up until early in the second half when a foul was called on a CSU free kick in the box, awarding that penalty which Maddie Young converted at the 53:38 mark.
Sever then came up big for the winner, heading in
Gaby Schwartz's free kick that came from near midfield for the brace at the 68:35 mark. The defense did the rest, allowing just a pair of corner kicks and a single Viking shot that sailed high the rest of the way.
For the afternoon, MKE claimed advantages of 12-to-7 in shots, 6-to-5 in shots on goal, and 5-to-4 in corner kicks. Sever and
Mackenzie Schill led the way with four shots apiece.
Elaina LaMacchia recorded four saves to pick up the win in net.
Up next, the Panthers are home to host Detroit Mercy March 17. Game time against the Titans is set for 1 p.m. at Engelmann Stadium.
