YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Freshmen Greta Carbone and Iva Stejskalova tallied wins in singles for the Milwaukee tennis team, but the team came up short in their Horizon League opener against Youngstown State by a score of 4-3.
 
The Panthers (7-3, 0-1) earned an early doubles point, but Youngstown State (8-7, 1-0)  rebounded from doubles and won the first four singles matches to clinch the match.
 
"We played pretty well in doubles, but didn't carry any of that momentum into singles," said head coach Jason Potthoff. "We gave them too much breathing room to start sets on almost every court, and we didn't capitalize on enough of our opportunities once we had gotten back into the matches. If we manage the momentum swings better tomorrow we will be fine, so we've just got to get our minds right and be prepared for another battle."
 
Anna Daniel Fuentes and Agata Jurczak got off the courts first defeating Lucia Zaga and Jessica Stanmore 6-2 from the No. 3 doubles line. Reigning Doubles Team of the Week Mayya Perova and Nikki Milner saw their seven-match win streak come to a halt when Elisa Masarikova and Tamara Teufl defeated the junior duo 6-3, and even the match. Carbone and Stejskalova clinched the point for MKE, winning 6-4 from the No. 1 line.
 
In singles, Carbone and Stejskalova picked up the remaining two point for the Panthers winning, 3-6, 6-4, 2-0 (retried) and 7-5, 0-6, 7-5.
 
Milwaukee will look to bounce back tomorrow as the series concludes against the Penguins. First serve is set for 10 a.m. CT from the YSU Tennis Center.
