FRANKLIN, Wis. – Three different players scored goals and
Elaina LaMacchia recorded the shutout and picked up an assist on offense as the Milwaukee women's soccer team defeated Wright State, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon at the MOSH Performance Center.
"I am really proud of the team," head coach
Troy Fabiano said. "First half was a little bit hectic; second half was better. To Wright State's credit, they were very organized and caused some problems for us in the first half. Second half, we settled things down and played."
The Panthers (3-0) scored a goal just before the half and then broke it open with two more after intermission to down the Raiders (1-2) for the for sixth straight time in the series. With the win, MKE also extended its unbeaten streak in regular-season Horizon League play to 36 (33-0-3) in a row.
"Actually I am really excited that the temperatures are warming up and we are going to be able to train on a full field now," Fabiano added.
Scoreless until deep into the first half,
Maggie Woods picked up a turnover near midfield and found
Mackenzie Schill for a breakaway opportunity. Schill did the rest, finishing to the far post at the 38:19 mark for her third goal of the season to make it 1-0.
The Panthers picked things up offensively in the second and added to the lead in the 50
th minute. Following a combination of passes to the middle,
Taylor Hattori turned and chipped the ball over the goalkeeper for her second tally of the year.
LaMacchia was credited with four saves on the day in registering the 19
th shutout of her career. She also provided the first assist for a Milwaukee keeper since Erin Kane in 2006 late in the match, when her goal kick was flicked downfield by a header from
Haley Steel. The pass created a one-on-one opportunity for
Natalie Auble, who netted her second goal of the season to cap the scoring at the 79:30 mark.
"Every coach has their favorite goalkeeper – meaning they think their goalkeeper is the best in the conference – but I think she is very good," Fabiano said of LaMacchia. "I just don't think she gets the credit, because she doesn't get as many opportunities."
Milwaukee had a couple more dangerous chances that could have added to the lead.
Rachel Phillpotts just missed a goal in the 62
nd minute, seeing her header off a corner kick cleared off the line by a WSU defender.
Schill, who picked up an assist on goal No. 2, also nearly had a second of her own, sending a blast off the right post after creating space on the left flank in the 74
th minute.
Milwaukee held 58 percent of possession on the afternoon and compiled a slim 11-10 edge in shots, while also putting together a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. MKE also earned five of the six corner kicks in the match. Schill and Phillpotts tied for the team lead with three shots each.
Up next, the Panthers remain at home, set to host IUPUI March 3. Kick off against the Jaguars is set for 1 p.m.
