Tennis Set for Two This Weekend

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis will host a set of dual meets this weekend as they take on the Northern Iowa Panthers and UW-Whitewater Warhawks. The team will start the weekend off against UNI Saturday (Feb. 13), and will follow with a Sunday (Feb. 14) matinee against the Warhawks. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on both days at River Glen Elite.

Last Time Out: The Panthers came up short against Marquette, losing 5-2, but battled throughout the match.

Freshman Greta Carbone earned the first point for the Black & Gold in singles competition by defeating MU's Giulia Turconi, 7-5, 6-1 from the No. 1 singles line. With the win Carbone moves to 2-0 on the year so far.

Tallying the second point for the Panthers, senior Anna Daniel Fuentes won 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 over Elisabeth Desmarais last Saturday, improving her record to 2-0 as well.

About Northern Iowa: The (UNI) Panthers started the interrupted 2020 season 3-8 (0-0 MVC), with wins over Ferris State, Gustavus Adolphus and St. Thomas.

They return seven players from last year's roster, including four seniors. Of the four, Harri Proudfoot garners the most experience with a combined record of 8-30 singles record and 15-25 doubles record.

About UW-Whitewater: March 7, 2020 against the Panthers was the last time the UWW Warhawks saw action, with Milwaukee taking the match 6-1.

The Warhawks are a 13-time defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion (WIAC), and lost only one player from the 2019-20 squad. The program has made 12-straight NCAA Tournament Appearances including six trips to the Round of 16.

Potthoff at the Helm: Jason Potthoff enters his fourth season with the Panthers. During his time with MKE, he has amassed 27 victories, including a six match improvement following the year he arrived. In 2018, he led the Panthers back to the Horizon League Tournament after a two year absence.

Seniors Lead the Way: Anna Daniel Fuentes returns to the Black & Gold with the NCAA granting 2020 spring student-athletes eligibility due to the pandemic. Fuentes ended 2020 with an 8-5 record from the No. 4 singles line, and played a pivotal role in the teams doubles lineup. Teamed up with fellow senior Agata Jurczak, the duo finished 8-3 together, helping the team to a combined 28-7 doubles record. Lucy Harper also returns to the lineup with notable experience in both singles and doubles.

Fan Update: The Horizon League Board of Directors has decided, as a part of its role of overseeing League-wide safety protocols focused on consistency and clarity for all League competition, that all indoor league sports this year will be played without fans. This policy extends to team pass lists, complimentary tickets and band/spirit squads.

Milwaukee Athletics remains committed to ensuring the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, our staff and the campus and the community. All decisions will be made with the guidance provided by county, state, campus and Horizon League officials. In addition, all game dates and times are subject to change based on current protocols.
