MILWAUKEE, Wis. – After spending six seasons in the New York Yankees' organization, Milwaukee baseball alumnus
Brian Keller was selected in Major League Baseball's Rule 5 Draft by the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.
"Brian continues to excel at every opportunity given," head coach
Scott Doffek commented. "He obviously did a great job in representing the Yankees the past 5-6 years. It's no surprise to me to see him continue to do exceptionally well. Being taken in the Rule 5 draft is a great indication of his success. The Red Sox are getting a true competitor."
Keller, the 2016 Horizon League Pitcher of the Year, was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 39th round of the MLB Draft in 2016 and has spent the last few years in the minors.
MLB's Rule 5 Draft is held each December and allows clubs without a full 40-man roster to select certain non-40 man roster players from other clubs.
Keller had an impressive career with the Panthers, racking up 18 wins and 239 strikeouts in 60 appearances. As a senior in 2016, Keller finished 10-3 with a 3.10 earned run average and 103 strikeouts in 107.1 innings of work as he was named Pitcher of the Year.
