DES MOINES, IOWA – The Milwaukee tennis team took two-of-three matches in doubles play against Northern Illinois to highlight Saturday's second day of the Bulldog Classic.
After a rough start against Drake in singles, the Black & Gold rebounded with two wins in doubles against the Northern Illinois Huskies.
MKE's
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova improved to 2-0 on the weekend with another 8-4 victory.
Freshmen
Avery Durham and
Giorgia Cavestro also picked up a win together from the No. 3 doubles line, defeating their Husky opponent, 8-6.
"There were some really good performances today, we just didn't get the results we wanted on a few singles courts," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "But we rebounded with some more strong doubles to finish the day, and given how banged up and under the weather some of the team was feeling, I'm really happy with how everyone competed."
In singles, the Panthers struggled against Drake, but senior
Anika Tylek made quick work of her opponent, dropping just one game, and winning 6-0, 6-1 over Yana Gaskell.
From the No. 4 singles line,
Iva Stejskalova also tallied a W, sweeping Jyun-Yi Lee, 6-2, 6-2.
Milwaukee is slated to face Northern Illinois in singles to kick-off the third and final day of the Classic on Sunday. Following singles, MKE will finish with Nebraska-Omaha in doubles.
