DES MOINES, IOWA – The Milwaukee tennis team totaled seven wins on the first day of the Bulldog Classic on Friday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center hosted by Drake University.
A total of four teams are competing at the Bulldog Classic this weekend, Milwaukee, Nebraska – Omaha, Northern Illinois, and host Drake University. On Friday, the Panthers were paired against Drake in doubles and Nebraska-Omaha in singles.
The Black & Gold got off to a great start with a clean sweep in doubles play over the Bulldogs.
"Today was definitely our most complete day as a team so far this fall," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "Getting the sweep in doubles against Drake gave us some pretty good momentum heading into singles."
Sophomore duo,
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova got the Panthers started with an 8-4 victory to tally the first win.
Avery Durham and
Anika Tylek won 8-4 from the No. 3 doubles line, while seniors
Mayya Perova and
Nikki Milner finished off the Bulldogs in an 8-7(5) victory.
In singles, the Panthers collected four more wins over Nebraska-Omaha to finish the day 7 and 2.
"Omaha fought really hard to turn some of those matches around after we got out to a few really hot starts, so I was very pleased to see us come away with wins on four out of the six courts," said Potthoff. "There are definitely some things we can sharpen up heading into singles tomorrow, but overall this was a strong start to the weekend."
Both Stejskalova and
Avery Durham made quick work in their matches, sweeping their opponents 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-4.
Milner and Carbone were both even after two, but won handedly in the third and final set to take the match, winning 6-1, 6-2, 6-0 and 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-2, respectively.
On Saturday, the Panthers will begin with doubles against Northern Illinois, then follow-up against host Drake in singles.
