EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon pitching staff pitched very well in leading the way against the Milwaukee baseball team, earning a doubleheader sweep with victories of 7-2 and 6-0 Saturday at PK Park.
The Panthers (1-10) had trouble getting things going against the Ducks (6-4), who improved to 6-0 at home this season with the wins.
Oregon broke up a scoreless game in the third inning of the nightcap, doing nearly all of its damage with five runs in the frame. The bullpen was great the rest of the way, allowing just one unearned run from that point.
Dylan Szajkovics did the heavy lifting, allowing no earned runs in 3.2 innings of relief. He walked one and struck out four.
Will Wohlt closed out the day with 1.1 shutout frames.
"Tons of credit goes to their (Oregon) arms – just an outstanding day of pitching," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "Mike (Edwards) came out throwing the ball great and for whatever reason just lost it in the third inning. Dylan (Szajkovics) was very good out of the pen for us, so that was good to see."
Peyton Fuller (1-0) was very impressive for the Ducks, striking out eight and walking none in his 6.0 scoreless innings of work.
Adam LaRock had a base hit and
Jack Thelen went 2-for-3 to account for the MKE offense.
In the opener, the Ducks struck quickly, scoring two in the first – and in three of the first four innings overall – to build a sizable 7-0 advantage. The Panthers struck for a pair in the seventh on an RBI-single from
Jack Kraus and a run-scoring double off the bat of
Nate DeYoung.
Michael Rodriguez (1.2 IP/0 R) and
Matt DeYoung closed out the day with 4.2 shutout innings between the pair. DeYoung went the final 3.0 shutout, walking none while adding a pair of K's.
Kraus finished 3-for-4, with
Zach Nogalski (2-for-4) also added a multi-hit outing.
The two teams wrap up the series Sunday at 2 p.m. CST.
