Panthers Fall In Extra Innings In Opener, 6-4

Teams will play a doubleheader Saturday

EUGENE, Ore. – Gabe Matthews hit a home run in the 11th inning to send Oregon to a 6-4 victory over the Milwaukee baseball team Friday night at PK Park.

After trailing early, the Panthers (1-8) led the Ducks by a score of 4-2 until the eighth inning. The Ducks (4-4) rallied to score the final four runs of the evening to remain undefeated at home through four games this season.

"That was just a great college baseball game," head coach Scott Doffek said. "We certainly had opportunities to put that one away and didn't take advantage.  I definitely saw some positives – I loved the way we competed; we just didn't execute enough on either side."

Zach Nogalski turned the game around with one swing of the bat in the sixth inning, with his bases-loaded double down the right field line chasing everyone home and giving MKE the 3-2 lead at the time.

Nogalski drove in Adam LaRock and Mike Ferri, who had each singled, as well as Mitchell Buban who had drawn the walk to load them up.

Jack Kraus added to the advantage an inning later, sending a home run over the wall in left center to make it 4-2.

The pitching staff then skirted trouble in the seventh – stranding a pair – before giving up two runs in the eighth. Matt Vanek did come out of the bullpen to limit the damage, getting a strikeout and a comebacker to leave the bases loaded.

The Panthers had a great chance to go ahead in the top of the 11th, but could not take advantage of loading the bases with just one out. Matthews' bomb ended the contest two batters later.

Matt McCarty got the start and threw well after a shaky first inning. He worked around a bases-loaded, no-out situation at the start and settled in, retiring 10 in a row from that point. He finished the day after 5.0 innings, allowing two runs while striking out three.

Each team finished with 10 hits, with MKE being led by two-hit efforts from LaRock, Ferri, Nogalski and Kraus.

The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday, set for a game one first pitch of 3 p.m. CST.
