Hornets Hold Panthers Off Scoreboard In Game Two

MKE looks to take game three Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Parker Brahms led Sacramento State to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Milwaukee baseball team Friday night at John Smith Field.

Brahms finished with 10 strikeouts as the Hornets (3-2) blanked the Panthers (1-5) in a game that was closer than the final score showed.

Milwaukee outhit Sacramento State, 6-to-5, and had runners in scoring position in both the third and the fourth innings but were unable to convert and take early control of the contest.

The decision spoiled a terrific start from Matt McCarty (0-1), who allowed just two hits and one earned run over his 6.0-inning performance. McCarty struck out three and walked two, leaving with his team behind 2-0 despite leaving five runners on base over the first five frames.

"Just an outstanding job by Matt McCarty today," head coach Scott Doffek said. "I am really encouraged with how he is throwing it. This game isn't for the faint of heart and that is what I love about it. We are looking forward to another fun challenge tomorrow."

Brahms was up to the task, finishing with those 10 K's in his 6.0 innings – walking no one – to break the school record with 280 career strikeouts.

"We got exposed with fastball command," Doffek said. "There is a reason he is the all-time strikeout leader.  We had some opportunities early and just couldn't capitalize."

Zach Nogalski and Mike Ferri each put together 2-for-4 outings, with Ferri adding a pair of stolen bases. Joey Scaffidi and Adam LaRock also had singles.

The teams get back together for game three Saturday, set for a first pitch of 4 p.m. CST.
