WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Seton Hall broke open a pitcher's duel with four runs in the sixth inning and kept adding on from there in defeating the Milwaukee baseball team Sunday morning at David Couch Ballpark.
The Panthers (1-3) led the Pirates (2-1) right from the start, but the 1-0 advantage only held up for an inning. The contest was knotted at 1-1 until late, with Seton Hall eventually cruising to the 17-1 victory.
"This was a 1-1 game in the sixth and the wheels fell off," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "Mike (Edwards) really threw the ball well today and I was very encouraged with his outing. But the bullpen was just non-competitive with the strike zone. There are going to be some growing pains with this group, but I fully expect them to relax and improve moving forward."
Joe Vyskocil got Milwaukee on the board immediately; driving in a run with a single after
Mitchell Buban had also gotten on base with a single.
Starter
Mike Edwards (0-1) pitched very well through the first five innings, allowing just one run while striking out six in that span. Things went Seton Hall's way in the sixth, however, plating four runs on five hits.
Overall, the offense was quiet on the day, with
Mike Ferri,
Ty Olejnik and
Nate DeYoung also adding base hits.
The Panthers head to California for a four-game series at Sacramento State next. First pitch of the opener is set for 7 p.m. CST Thursday.
