MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team opened the 2020 season with a 7-0 sweep over Cardinal Stritch Friday afternoon from River Glen Elite.
The Milwaukee Panthers (1-0) dominated their season opener sweeping the Cardinal Stritch Wolves (0-1), 7-0. The black & gold won seven-of-nine matches in straight sets, including all three in doubles.
"This was a great test for us to start the season," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "Cardinal Stritch has some great strikers and they compete exceptionally well. I'm really pleased with the way we handled the momentum swings and closed out sets and matches. We're looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow against Eastern Illinois."
MKE jumped out on top earning the first point by sweeping all three double matches. The Panthers dropped just six sets in all three doubles matches.
In singles,
Mayya Perova,
Nikki Milner,
Anika Tylek and
Lucy Harper won in straight sets to give MKE a commanding lead.
Seniors
Nicole Clarke and
Anna Daniel Fuentes dropped their first set, but came back from behind to win each of their matches. Clarke defeated reigning Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year Lisa Keller 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 while Daniel Fuentes defeated Antonia Elze 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Next up, the Panthers will take on Eastern Illinois at 4 p.m. from the Vaughan Athletic Center in Aurora, Ill.
