MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – With three invitationals set for the fall of 2019, the Milwaukee Tennis team opened the season with four single wins at the Gopher Invite.
The Gopher Invite includes an array of teams across the Midwest. Milwaukee, Minnesota, Drake, Iowa State, North Dakota, Iowa, UNI, and Green Bay highlight this year's competition.
In singles,
Nicole Clarke came from behind to win her first match as a senior, defeating Karen Alvarez of Iowa State 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4). With the win, Clarke advances in the winner bracket and will take on North Dakota's Nina Zdravkovic Saturday.
Also picking up a win for the Black & Gold was newcomer
Anika Tylek. Tylek won in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5 over fellow Horizon League opponent Jenna Noel of Green Bay. The Canadian native will face Megan Webb of Drake tomorrow.
Veterans
Lucy Harper and
Anna Daniel Fuentes earned the other two single wins over UNI's Morganne Borsh and Oliva Fain. Daniel Fuentes took care of business at 2, 1 and Harper won at 6-4, 7-6, 8-6. Daniel Fuentes will take on Vale Caro of UNI, while Harper matches up against Theresa Tebon of Green Bay.
In doubles, MKE's
Agata Jurczak and
Nikki Milner earned the lone win over Northern Iowa's Oliva Fain and Morganne Borsh at 6-3.
Milwaukee will wrap up the Invite Saturday beginning with doubles play starting at 9 a.m.
