Panthers Come Up Short on Senior Day

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – After a slow start to the game, the Milwaukee baseball team nearly pulled off a comeback, but came up short 6-5 against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Sunday afternoon from Henry Aaron Field.

Milwaukee (29-18-1, 16-10) struggled to find any kind of rhythm at the plate thanks to Oakland's (11-34, 9-15) starter Nick Parr who kept the offense in check allowing just two runs, three walks and seven strikeouts through six innings.  The Panthers scored late in the final two innings to come within a run, but Oakland's Austin Sherry shattered any hopes of a comeback getting a ground out for the final out and hang on for the win.

"Oakland's pitcher (Parr) pitched really well today, so you have to give him credit," said head coach Scott Doffek. "They also made some special, extra defensive plays that made the difference in the game. As for these seniors, they're a great bunch of guys and I'm proud of them all, and it's unfortunate we couldn't pull this one out today."

The Golden Grizzlies jumped out to a four-run lead after two and a half innings of play scoring one in the second inning and three in the third, including a three-run home run from Matt Dielo.

Milwaukee responded back with single runs in the third and fourth, taking advantage of a couple miscues from the Oakland defense and cut the lead to two.

Oakland tallied another run to put the lead back to four runs, but the Panthers had other plans.

With Colin Kreiter on first, Tyler Bordner hit his second home run in as many days over the center field fence and get the Panthers within two. MKE put two more runners on base when Jack Kraus drew and walk and Mike Ferri singled, but the Panther scoring stalled when Austin Sherry got two ground outs to end the inning and maintain a 6-4 lead.

After a 1-2-3 inning from Alex McIntosh in the top of the ninth, the Panthers shaved the deficit to just one when Joe Vyskocil singled through the left side, scoring Zach Nogalski who drew a leadoff walk. Milwaukee had two opportunities to score one for the tie or walk off, but they were held to two ground outs to end the game in a 6-5 loss.

The Panthers will host it's final regular season game Tuesday, May 14 against Northern Illinois. Game time is slated for a 12 p.m. start at Henry Aaron field.
