Four-Run Fourth Propel Panthers to 7-5 Victory Over Oakland

"MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Freshman Nate DeYoung had a day at the plate and helped the Milwaukee baseball team to a 7-5 over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Friday afternoon from Henry Aaron Field.

The Black & Gold (28-1-1, 15-9) fell behind Oakland (10-31, 8-14) in the second inning when the Golden Grizzlies scored four runs, but a four-run fourth and stellar relief pitching from Mike Edwards, the Panthers went on to win game one of the series.

"We knew going in we with the pitching matchup we were going in to stack the lineup with some lefties and tried to prepare Nate (DeYoung) for that and he came up big today," said head coach Scott Doffek. "Mike (Edwards) settled in extremely well being behind 4-1 when he entered, and did an outstanding job out of the pen to get the game back under control and give our hitters a chance to chip away at the lead."

Milwaukee took an early lead in the first inning when Trevor Schwecke plated senior Devin Rybacki for the one run advantage, but the lead didn't last long when Oakland took advantage of a couple of Panther walks in the second inning.

Oakland led the second inning with back-to-back singles, then back-to-back walks to tie the game at one. Panther Matt Vanek almost got out of the inning with limited damage striking out the next two Oakland batters, but Mike Mcgee hit a big two-out double to right center clearing the bases for the 4-1 lead.

In the fourth inning, Milwaukee reached base in its first four batters by way of walk or hit by pitch. After Mitchell Buban plated the first Panther run of the inning, DeYoung tied it up at four after a single through the right side scoring Oakland Scanlan and Bordner. DeYoung led the Panthers with a 3-for-4, two RBI performance.

From there, reliever Mike Edwards took control and held the Golden Grizzlies scoreless until the ninth inning surrendering just the one run.

After a leadoff walk in the ninth, closer Jake Sommers came in for the save and sat down the next two batters picking up his eighth save of the season.

Game two of the series between the Panthers and Golden Grizzlies will be played at Miller Park Saturday, May 11 beginning at 3 p.m. Parking lots open at 1 p.m. and gates open at 2:30 p.m. for the contest. Fans should enter through the Home Plate entrance doors. Admission for the game and parking are both free.
