MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Down three runs in the bottom of the ninth,
Matt Quartel led the Milwaukee baseball team to series win on a three-run, walkoff homerun to win game two of the doubleheader 7-6 against Wright State after dropping game one 14-12.
In an important game, the Milwaukee Panthers (22-14, 10-7) came from behind trailing three runs entering the bottom of the ninth. On an 0-1 count, senior
Matt Quartel took the next ball and hit it over the right field fence giving the Panthers a 7-6 victory over Wright State (27-13, 11-7) and a series win.
"We didn't quit and it's a testament to our upperclassmen and senior leadership," said Panther head coach
Scott Doffek. "This team is resilient and won't stop playing until the game is over and I think that's the trademark of our team."
The Panthers trailed right from the beginning by two runs in the first, but answered back in the bottom half of the inning scoring two runs on two hits.
After a Panther ground out,
Mitchell Buban doubled to left field to get into scoring position for reigning league Co-Batter of the Week,
Trevor Schwecke. Ahead in the count 2-0, Schwecke delivered with a rope over the right center field fence to knot the game up at two.
MKE took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when
Joe Vyskocil singled to right field scoring Schwecke. From there, both pitchers from both sides kept the offense in check until the final innings of the game.
Big home runs came from both sides of the plate in the last two innings of the game. Raiders' Damon Dues hit his second grand slam of the day in the eighth for the three-run advantage, but Panthers'
Matt Quartel got the last swing in with the game winning, three-run home run win it 7-6.
Game one of the doubleheader saw a combined 26 runs, but Wright State came out on top winning 14-12. Senior
Devin Rybacki lead the Panthers with a 3-for-5 performance, while Quartel chipped in with two hits and three RBI in the game.
Next up, the Panthers will face Big Ten foe Iowa, Tuesday, April 23. The game is slated for a 6:05 p.m. start.
