IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Milwaukee baseball team came up short Tuesday evening against Big Ten opponent Iowa falling in extra innings by a score of 5-4 at Duane Banks Field.
Most of the excitement came at the end of the game when the Panthers (22-15) went ahead in the 11
th by a run, but were unable to close it out allowing Iowa (24-15) to score in the final two frames and lose on a walk off homerun in the bottom of the 12
th .
Both teams hit the ball well, but both teams also put up a double-digit number for runners left on base.
"We did a lot of nice things tonight, but we just didn't execute situationally in the box," said head coach
Scott Doffek. "We had a lot of opportunities to take control and couldn't push them across, but overall tonight was just a good college baseball game."
Senior
Devin Rybacki got the game started with an infield single and would later cross the plate when
Trevor Schwecke singled through the left side knocking in his team leading 35
th RBI.
The Hawkeyes answered right back scoring one to tie the game, but starter
Jared Reklaitis controlled the damage and got a ground out and pop out to end the inning and two Hawkeyes left stranded on baes.
In the second, Milwaukee put together a two run, three hit inning for the two-run advantage.
Oakland Scanlan and
Mitchell Buban started the inning with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position after
Matt Quartel bunted them over. Rybacki then cleared the bases with triple to right center scoring both Scanlan and Buban to go up 3-1.
Iowa put up a single run in the bottom of the second and then again in the seventh, but were only able to tie the game at three after
Alex McIntosh got the Hawkeyes to ground out and end the inning with two left on base.
The Panther pitching staff kept the Hawkeye offense in check mostly allowing five runs while scattering 13 hits and holding 12 runners on base.
"By in large our pitchers did a really nice job throughout," said Doffek. "We have to give their pitchers some credit as well because they also made some big pitches when needed as well."
The Panthers had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the ninth with runners at the corners and one out, but were unable to capitalize. The Panthers looked to squeeze in pinch runner
Nick Moeser, but the suicide bunt attempt failed and Moeser was tagged out.
Two innings later, Rybacki came up clutch again in the 11
th hitting a two-out single to left field scoring
Jack Thelen for a 4-3 advantage.
Every time Milwaukee scored, Iowa answered back and the 11
th was no different. Iowa put together one run on two hits in the 11
th and walked off in the bottom of the 12
th with a solo shot from Justin Jenkins to end the game.
Both Rybacki and Schwecke led the Panthers with three hits each, while Rybacki had three RBI and a triple.
Next up, the Panthers resume league play with Norther Kentucky coming to town for a three-game series. First game of the series is schedule for Friday, April 26 at 4 p.m. from Henry Aaron Field.
