Weather Shortens Day For Milwaukee Baseball Team

Series wraps up tomorrow at 12 p.m. CST

PROVO, Utah – A March snowstorm spoiled the day for the Milwaukee baseball team, bringing an end to game one of a scheduled doubleheader against Brigham Young Friday at Larry Miller Field.

The Panthers (6-5) led early, but saw the Cougars (10-3) put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the second and third inning to take a big lead. Milwaukee made a dent in the deficit, but ran out of time when the game was called after one pitch was thrown in the bottom of the sixth with BYU ahead, 14-6.

MKE recorded eight hits, led by two apiece from Devin Rybacki (2-for-3/2 runs), Trevor Schwecke (2-for-3/2 runs/2 RBI), Colin Kreiter (2-for-2/2 runs) and Tyler Bordner (2-for-3/2 RBI).

Milwaukee jumped ahead right away in the first, with Schwecke opening the scoring with an RBI-double. Bordner legged out an infield hit with the throw getting away, allowing two more runs to score for a quick 3-0 lead.

The pitching couldn't hold the Cougars, who plated multiple runs in the second through fourth to build a big 10-3 advantage.

No worries for the Panthers, who drew back within three at 10-6 in the fifth, getting one run on an RBI-single from Schwecke and two more from Bordner when his double made it all the way to the wall in right center.

The pitching just couldn't hold BYU down, answering with four of its own in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead once again.

Rain was on and off all game, with a heavy downpour entering the area in the top of the sixth. The teams were called off the field and the weather quickly turned to snow with temps in the low-30's. With visible accumulation within 20 minutes, the decision to call game one and cancel game two was made shortly afterwards.

The series concludes with a single game Saturday, set for a first pitch of 12 p.m. CST.
