HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY. – The Milwaukee baseball team scored six runs on 10 hits in a 6-2 victory over Northern Kentucky Sunday afternoon capping off a sweep over the Norse. With the win, head coach
Scott Doffek ties Milwaukee baseball's All-Time Wins Record at 347.
Panthers'
Nick Winter (1-0) and
Jack Mahoney kept the Norse (4-16, 3-3) bats at bay allowing just two runs while scattering seven hits. Sunday's win over the Norse moves the Panthers (12-8, 4-2) into a three-way tie for first place in the Horizon League.
"Nick (Winter) gave us a quality start and was outstanding today," said head coach
Scott Doffek "Jack (Mahoney) also put together a solid outing for us, and the two combined for a great game."
NKU jumped out in front right away in the first inning scoring Andrew Bacon singled up the middle, scoring Sam Hedges from second after a leadoff double. The Norse would put one more on board, but scoring threat came to a halt two batters later when
Nick Winter got Jayden Wakeham to ground out to the shortstop.
Milwaukee gained the lead in the third inning and never looked back scoring four runs on four hits.
With bases loaded and one out, Panthers'
Joe Vyskocil singled to center, scoring
Matt Quartel to tie the game at one. After a ground out, senior
Colin Kreiter had a clutch, two-out hit with a single through the right side scoring
Trevor Schwecke and Vyskocil putting the Panthers up 4-1, but not before Bordner gave MKE the lead on fielder's choice RBI.
The Panthers tacked on two more insurance runs in the fourth inning when
Mitchell Buban tripled to center field on the first pitch scoring
Matt Quartel and
Oakland Scanlan, and take a commanding 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Northern Kentucky answered back, but were limited to just one run after Winter struck out Griffin Kain to end the inning with Milwaukee ahead 6-2.
From the fifth inning on,
Jack Mahoney and the Panthers put the lid on any chance of the Norse scoring. Mahoney finished the game pitching four shutout innings with no hits and three strike outs.
Joe Vyskocil,
Colin Kreiter and
Matt Quartel recorded two hits each to lead the Panthers in the final game.
Milwaukee returns to action against Illinois State on Tuesday, March 26. The Panthers and Red Birds are slated for a 5 p.m. start time from Duffy Bass Field.
