Milwaukee Falls In Tight Pitching Matchup, 3-0

Series finale tomorrow at 11 a.m. CST

DAYTON, Ohio – The Milwaukee baseball team allowed just four hits on the mound, but stranded 11 runners on base in a tough 3-0 loss to Wright State Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.

"It's a shame to waste such a good start on the mound," head coach Scott Doffek said. "Matt (Vanek) did a really nice job throughout. We competed in the box against a good arm and had plenty of chances, but we just couldn't come up with that big hit."

The Panthers (8-7, 1-1 Horizon League) outhit the Raiders (10-5, 1-1 Horizon League) 9-to-4 on the afternoon, but a pair of solo home runs and an unearned run provided the difference.

Milwaukee rallied one last time in the ninth, loading the bases to get the tying run on. However, a stellar defensive play prevented a base hit that would have scored at least two runs, ending the contest.

Trevor Schwecke led the MKE offense with a 3-for-3 effort. Jack Thelen (2-for-3) and Mitchell Buban (2-for-5) also added multi-hit outings.

The result came despite a great effort on the mound for the Panthers. Matt Vanek (2-1) got the start and threw well, allowing four hits and two runs in 6.1 innings. He walked four and struck out four.

Jack Mahoney pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing an unearned run despite not giving up a hit. He also walked one and added a K.

The two teams will play the series finale tomorrow, set for a first pitch of 11 a.m. CST.
