Wright State Escapes With Narrow Win Thursday

Odegard, Reit each score 16 in close loss

MILWAUKEE – Wright State hit three free throws in the closing seconds to escape from the Klotsche Center with a 73-69 win over the Milwaukee women's basketball team Thursday evening to take a one and a half game lead over the rest of the Horizon League.

Lizzie Odegard and Jamie Reit each scored 16 points to lead the way for the Panthers (10-12, 5-6 Horizon) in a thrilling performance against the league leaders. But, WSU (19-5, 11-1 Horizon) – ranked eighth in this week's Mid-Major poll – maintained their spot at the top of the conference with just enough plays down the stretch.

"When we played (Wright State) at their place, they had three total offensive rebounds, but we gave up a bunch of points in transition. This time, I felt like we did a better job on the transition defense side…but we just didn't have that toughness of boxing out," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We just didn't have that intensity tonight.

"I hope we get another chance at them – it's been a four-point game both times. We had some people really step up. I was really proud of Lizzie for really getting in this week and getting a lot of shots up. Jamie Reit was really hitting some shots for us, as well. And Sydney Staver came off the bench for us and had three assists and zero turnovers in a very small amount of time. I definitely have to find her more minutes."

Odegard was the leader early, racking up 11 points and six rebounds in the first half alone before finishing with 16 points and a career-high 12 assists for her first career double-double.

Reit had the hot hand late, scoring 13 of her 16 points after the break to go with three rebounds and three assists.

Bre Cera and Megan Walstad each finished with seven points, while Sydney Levy added another six off the bench.

Emily Vogelpohl hit a number of clutch shots and finished with a team-high 15 points for Wright State.

After starting the game slowly and in the hole 9-0, the Panthers started warming up with production off the bench. Brandi Bisping hit a three before eight-straight points from Odegard to end the first quarter.

McKaela Schmelzer hit a three from the wing with 4:29 left in the second to cap a 7-0 MKE run and close the gap to 28-26, forcing a timeout by WSU and showing the league leaders the Panthers weren't going away without a fight.

Trailing 58-45 late in the third, the Panthers once again showed their resilience with a 13-2 run to cut the gap to 60-58 with 7:13 left to play.

After trading buckets back-and-forth, Odegard hit her career-high fourth triple to make it 69-67 with 34 seconds left. Wright State earned a trip to the line and went 1-for-2 with just over seven seconds left.

The Raiders elected to foul, sending Reit to the line where she sank both to close the gap to just one at 70-69. But, WSU hit three more from the charity stripe in the final six seconds to put this one away.

Milwaukee recorded 19 assists on its 24 made field goals and connected on 11 three pointers on the night.

Up next, Northern Kentucky comes to campus as the Panthers close out another brief home stand Saturday with a 2 pm contest from the Klotsche Center. Saturday's game is the annual "Pink Out" contest for the Panthers, with the team auctioning off special pink jerseys after the game to benefit Chix4aCause – an organization providing gifts of love for those battling cancer.
