Rechlicz Earns 100th Career Win At Milwaukee

Panthers lock down defensively for key win in league standings

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's basketball team held Northern Kentucky to just 10 made field goals for the game in a dominating defensive performance to the tune of a 59-38 win Saturday from the Klotsche Center.

The win is No. 100 for Panther head coach Kyle Rechlicz in her young head coaching career, doing so in impressive fashion.

The 10 made field goals are the fewest allowed by Milwaukee in a game in program history. MKE also held its opponent to just 21.3-percent shooting (now third in program history) and the 12 points at the break tied the fewest points allowed in a half by the Panthers.

"I love our team's resiliency," Rechlicz said after the win. "We come into the gym the next day (on Friday following a tough loss the night before) like it's a new opportunity. We had a great practice yesterday – the team was really focused and locked in…and we executed today. That's some of the best defense I've seen us play since I've been here."

Offensively, Megan Walstad had the hot hand early and finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, one block and two steals in just 20 minutes of action.

Lizzie Odegard also notched nine points and six rebounds on the day.

In all, all 14 Panthers (11-12, 6-6 Horizon) saw the court for significant time, with 11 different players finishing their way into the scoring column in the convincing win that puts MKE into a half-game lead over NKU (7-16, 6-7 Horizon) in the conference standings.

After the Norse netted the first basket of the game, Walstad worked her way down low for an and-one, and the Panthers never trailed again. Walstad added another early bucket, before two-pointers from McKaela Schmelzer and Akaylah Hayes quickly made it 9-2.

Sydney Levy started the second quarter with a quick-trigger three to keep things rolling offensively. Odegard finished the frame with another triple as MKE took a 31-12 lead into the break, holding NKU without a field goal during the entire second quarter.

Five quick points from Brandi Bisping ballooned the lead to 25 before another bucket from Levy made it 47-20 MKE with 37 seconds left on the clock in the third.

Alyssa Moore came off the bench for four points and a steal, while Alyssa Fischer drilled a pair of three pointers in what proved to be a very fun afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

Milwaukee finished the game dominating seemingly every statistical category, including rebounding (42-29), points in the paint (22-8) and bench points (41-21).

With the win, Rechlicz becomes the third coach in Milwaukee women's basketball history to reach the 100-win milestone, joining M.A. Kelling and Sandy Botham.

"Obviously there are so many people that helped me get to this point," Rechlicz said. "Amazing and high-character student-athletes. I've had some outstanding coaches and to hear some of their messages touched my heart.

"I'm blessed to be a Panther. I feel very supported here at Milwaukee and hoping for another hundred wins here in the future."

MKE now hits the road, leaving the state of Wisconsin for the first time in nearly a month as they get set to head to Northeast Ohio, starting with a Friday contest at Cleveland State.
