Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hot Start, Strong Defense Leads To Big Road Win For Panthers

Reit leads the way with 15 points

CHICAGO Jamie Reit poured in a game-high 15 points to lead the Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 48-37 road win over UIC Thursday evening from Credit Union 1 Arena.

The Panthers (15-13, 10-7 Horizon) jumped out to a 20-point lead at the break before locking in defensively, holding their opponent under 40 points for the third time in the last six games.

Milwaukee also once again flirted with more school block records, finishing one shy of tying the blocks in a game as a team with 10, while Ryaen Johnson tallied a career-high six blocks – also just one shy of tying the program record.

"Our defense once again was big for us tonight," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "It's like there was a lid on the basket in the second half for us, and we played tight offensively. But we found a way and I'll take it. When you're on the road you'll take a win any way you can get it, and tonight wasn't the prettiest but we'll gladly take it."

Reit had the hot hand right out of the gates, connecting on her first five shots of the game before finishing with 15 points and three rebounds.

Megan Walstad added another 10 points, five rebounds and two blocks in just 19 minutes.

Ryaen Johnson once again was a force to be reckoned with defensively, swatting a career-best six shots and hauling in a game-high 11 rebounds to go with one steal.

Akaylah Hayes came off the bench to add another nine points, two assists, one steal and one block, while Alyssa Fischer finished with five points, two rebounds and the first block of her collegiate career.

MKE started the game on fire. Reit connected on back-to-back triples to start the game before Walstad got in on the fun for a 9-0 start. After the Flames finally got on the board, Reit was at it again with a mid-range jumper followed by another triple to put her team ahead 14-6 just over five minutes into the game.

Back-to-back buckets from Sydney Staver made it 27-10 Panthers midway through the second and Milwaukee posted its largest lead of the game with the opening bucket of the third to go ahead 38-16.

But, the Flames would battle back. Behind the hot hand of junior guard Tylah Lampley – who scored all 15 of her points in the second half – UIC was able to cut Milwaukee's big lead down to seven at 43-36 midway through the fourth quarter.

Needing a big bucket, sophomore McKaela Schmelzer stepped up big time with a huge 3-pointer with 3:44 left to play to all but ice the game away as the Panther defense was in full form over the final 10 minutes.

MKE pulled down a season-high 52 rebounds and finished with a +18 edge on the boards.

The Panthers also limited UIC to just 28.0 percent (14-50) for the game.

Milwaukee now heads to IUPUI to close out the regular season Saturday for a 1 pm Central contest that will have a big impact on the final Horizon League standings.
