Jags Shoot Lights Out To Take Down Milwaukee

Panthers finish regular season tied for fifth

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI shot lights out to take down the Milwaukee women's basketball team, 76-55, Saturday afternoon from The Jungle.

The Jags (19-10, 13-5 Horizon) shot nearly 60 percent over the second and third quarters combined, finishing the game shooting 49.1 percent (26-53) overall in front of a big home crowd in their final regular season home contest.

With the loss, the Panthers (15-14, 10-8 Horizon) finish the season tied for fifth in the conference standings and will be the No. 6 seed in this year's tournament. They will open up the tournament on the road with a quarterfinal contest at No. 3 Youngstown State on Wednesday, with tip time scheduled for 6 pm Central.

Sydney Staver came off the bench to lead Milwaukee with a career-high 15 points in 17 minutes, finishing an impressive 5-7 from the floor to go with a perfect 4-4 performance from the free-throw line.

Horizon League Freshman of the Year candidate Megan Walstad again finished in double figures with 10 points – now the 18th time this season she's netted 10 or more points in a game.

Jamie Reit also reached double-digit scoring with 11 points to go with four rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Seniors Tamya Sims, Sydney Hall and Allex Brown combined for 40 points on their "Senior Day" to lead the way for IUPUI.

The Panthers started the game strong, connecting on a pair of triples from Walstad on their first two attempts of the game. In fact, Walstad scored the first eight points of the game for MKE in a back-and-forth opening frame.

IUPUI caught fire in the second, connecting on an incredible 9 of their 14 shots in the quarter. But, Milwaukee hung tough, with Staver coming off the bench to provide a huge spark. The sophomore scored the final 11 points of the half for Milwaukee to keep the gap to just 11 at the break.

The Panthers continued to fight and drew within 46-42 with 4:23 left in the third after a McKaela Schmelzer drive to the basket.

But, the Jags were able to rattle off a run of their own, finishing the frame on a 13-2 run to grab control and never look back.

Milwaukee finished the game with another three blocks to inch closer to the Horizon League single-season record of 154.

The Panthers were whistled for 21 fouls to IUPUI's 11 on the day, while MKE also had 10 steals – their second straight game with double-digit steals.

Milwaukee will now prepare for the Horizon League Tournament opener at Youngstown State. The Panthers and Penguins split the regular-season series, with each team winning on its home court.
