Seniors Shine In Milwaukee’s Home Finale

Panthers cruise to 30-point home win

MILWAUKEEAkaylah Hayes and Ryaen Johnson finished their home careers in style Saturday afternoon as the Milwaukee women's basketball team cruised to an 83-53 win over Oakland on "Senior Day" from the Klotsche Center.

Hayes led all players with a career-high 23 points Saturday as both her and Johnson stuffed the stat sheet in a key league win that moves Milwaukee back above .500 at 14-13 overall and 9-7 in the Horizon League.

"This was great," MKE head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "To have two games in a row where we really stepped in focused and ready to play – I'm just so impressed with our team right now. And they're having a lot of fun.

"We were trying to make tonight about them (Johnson and Hayes) and really celebrate them, because they absolutely deserve it. I'm really proud of those two, their mentality and how they're leading us right now."

Hayes' career-best 23 points came on an efficient 9-16 shooting from the floor, coupled with a perfect 5-5 performance from the free-throw line. She also hauled in a team-high six rebounds, dished out four assists, had three blocks and one steal to lead the way from start to finish.

Johnson once again did what she does best with another two blocked shots – adding to her school-record total that now stands at 65 for the season. The senior also finished with six points and three rebounds in the lopsided win.

Sydney Levy came off the bench and connected on four 3-pointers to finish with 14 points. Lizzie Odegard added another 10 points and five rebounds, while Jamie Reit also reached double figures with 12 points, three rebounds and one steal.

Kahlaijah Dean led the way for Oakland (6-21, 3-13 Horizon) with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

After splitting the first 20 points of the game, Milwaukee quickly grabbed control. Hayes hit back-to-back jumpers before a three ball from Odegard for a 7-0 MKE run forcing an Oakland timeout.

The Golden Grizzlies were able to stay within arm's reach of the Panthers until an offensive explosion midway through the third quarter. Leading 46-36, Levy came off the bench and instantly drilled a three. Following an and-one by OU, Odegard and Cera each hit a pair of threes to make it 55-39. Levy then scored the next eight points for MKE before a jumper from Brandi Bisping put the Panthers ahead 65-42 with just under a minute left in the quarter.

The lead swelled all the way to 31 in the fourth after Alyssa Fischer – initially part of this year's senior class before receiving a medical redshirt – came off the bench for five quick points.

Milwaukee's defense was once again on display, holding Oakland to just 30.9 percent shooting, just one made three pointer (1-7) and just nine points in the fourth quarter.

The Panthers finished the game shooting nearly 45 percent (29-65) for the game, outscoring the Golden Grizzlies in every quarter, out-rebounding them overall (41-35) and once again showing off their depth with a decisive 42-15 edge in points off the bench.

MKE closes out its weekend homestand with an incredible 142-87 combined score for an average margin of victory of 27.5.

"Now we get to go on the road for two more and I hope our team just continues to play with confidence," Rechlicz said. "We need to have this same mentality and know that we need to get it done on the defensive end. We're taking one game at a time right now and our focus next will be on UIC."

The Panthers and Flames will tip off Thursday at 7 pm from Credit Union 1 Arena.
