KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Mayya Perova and
Nikki Milner of the Milwaukee tennis team went 2-0 together in doubles to highlight the first day of the Western Michigan Fall Invite held at the West Hills Athletic Club.
Teams in this year's Western Michigan Fall Invite include DePaul, Butler, UIC, Iowa, Milwaukee and host Western Michigan.
In round one of doubles, Perova and Milner drew DePaul's Maddie Yergler and UIC's Izzy Marshall and defeated them, 7-5. Following Yergler and Marshall, Perova and Milner matched up against Butler's Nina Bertino and Roxanne Mackenzie. The duo finished 2-0 on the day after defeating Butler, 6-3.
In singles, the Black & Gold struggled going 2-5 on the day, but earned wins from juniors
Agata Jurczak and
Lucy Harper. Both Jurczak and Harper drew Butler foes, and both came out with a W, winning 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-4.
Mayya Perova lost a close match against Western Michigan's Femke Tjon-A-Joe, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9. In another close match, Cloe Ruette of Iowa squeaked out a match win over MKE's
Anna Daniel Fuentes, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
The Panthers return to action Saturday at the West Hills Athletic Club for day two-of-three of the Western Michigan Invite.
