IUPUI Escapes From Milwaukee In OT

Staver, Schmelzer, Walstad all net career highs in loss

MILWAUKEE – Macee Williams' second free throw attempt bounced around the rim four times before falling with 0.7 seconds left on the clock to give IUPUI a 67-66 overtime win over the Milwaukee women's basketball team Thursday evening from the Klotsche Center.

Megan Walstad, McKaela Schmelzer and Sydney Staver all tallied career highs in the scoring column for Milwaukee (9-10, 4-4 Horizon), but the Jaguars (12-7, 6-2 Horizon) were able to get the friendly roll to end MKE's win streak at four.

Walstad led all players with 21 points on 9-14 shooting. The freshman also brought it four rebounds and had a pair of blocks, steals and assists.

Schmelzer flirted with a triple-double for a little while before finishing with 14 points – a career high – six rebounds and five assists.

Staver provided a big spark off the bench early for Milwaukee, bringing their offense to life after a slow first quarter before finishing with a career-best 10 points. The sophomore also had three rebounds and three steals.

Akaylah Hayes added another seven points and four rebounds, while Brandi Bisping played some big minutes down the stretch, finishing with six points while playing stout defense against IUPUI's talented post players.

Milwaukee limited Williams – the Horizon League Preseason Player of the Year – to just 7-17 shooting – her third-lowest shooting percentage on the season. Williams also hauled in 10 rebounds to lead the way for the Jaguars.

After a slow start that saw MKE make just 3 of its first 17 attempts from the field, the Panthers exploded to the tune of a 25-5 run to grab a 43-29 lead midway through the third.

But, IUPUI was able to claw their way back and held a 61-59 edge with just 14 seconds to go. Milwaukee's initial shot to tie rimmed out, but Walstad was there for the rebound and the put-back to send this one to overtime.

Back-and-forth the game continued in the extra frame, with Hayes' jumper in the paint tied things up at 66-all with 1:09 left on the clock.

Both teams would be held without a field goal the rest of the way as the defenses were dialed up before Williams was able to get to the line and sink her second of the double bonus to give IUPUI its second last-second win inside the Klotsche Center in as many trips, claiming a 70-68 victory at the buzzer last season.

MKE won the rebounding battle, 39-34, finished with a 24-20 edge in points in the paint and had a 24-15 advantage in bench scoring. Both teams made nine three pointers, while IUPUI was able to get to the charity stripe 23 times compared to Milwaukee's eight.

Up next, the Panthers play host to UIC on a busy home Saturday. The festivities start at 10:30 am with the alumni scrimmage before Milwaukee goes up against the Flames at 2 pm for "90's Night" from the Klotsche Center.
