Panthers Cruise To 19-Point Home Win

Bisping leads the way with a career-high 12 points

MILWAUKEE – Thirteen Panthers found their way into the scoring column as the Milwaukee women's basketball team cruised to a 72-53 win over UIC Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

Playing in front of a host of former Panther greats on hand for Alumni Day, Milwaukee (10-10, 5-4 Horizon) shot nearly 60-percent from the floor in the first half to build a 42-23 lead at the break and held UIC (3-17, 1-8 Horizon) at bay the rest of the way, leading by double digits the entirety of the final 20 minutes.

"It was nice to be able to bounce back after the overtime loss to IUPUI," MKE head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We really came into this game focused. I thought our team really locked into the scouting report – something that we didn't do as well on Thursday. We really played some excellent basketball from start to finish.

"I think the strong point for me today was how much we moved the basketball. We had 16 assists going into the fourth quarter and that shows the mark of a really great team."

Brandi Bisping led Milwaukee with a career-high 12 points on 5-6 shooting off the bench. Jamie Reit was the lone other Panther to reach double digits on the day, scoring all 10 of her points in the first half of a balanced team win.

Sydney Levy added nine points in nine minutes, while Akaylah Hayes added another eight.

Alyssa Moore scored a career-high six points. Megan Walstad had six points, six rebounds and four assists. Lizzie Odegard had eight rebounds and a pair of assists, while Ryaen Johnson continued her strong play with four points, eight rebounds, two steals, two assists and another three blocks to up her season total to 48.

Brittany Byrd led the way for UIC with 22 points, playing all 40 minutes of Saturday's contest.

Milwaukee started the game very strong, with back-to-back buckets from Walstad, Reit and Hayes to quickly build a 12-6 lead at the first timeout. Then came the outside shots as Bisping, McKaela Schmelzer and Sydney Staver all hit threes on the next three possessions to quickly put MKE ahead by 13.

Reit added six quick points in the second quarter before another three from Bisping ballooned the lead to 19. Alyssa Moore's driving layup then made it a 20-point Panther advantage before holding a 42-23 lead at the break.

Milwaukee maintained the large advantage throughout the second half, going all the way up to a 26-point edge after a layup from Anaiah Moore and a three from Alyssa Fischer.

MKE finished with the nod in seemingly every statistical category, including winning the rebounding battle (40-29), points in the paint (24-12), points off turnovers (23-4) and bench points (46-5).

The Black & Gold took care of the ball very well Saturday, assisting on 19 of the team's 27 made field goals, while committing just 11 turnovers.

The Panthers start the second half of conference play next Saturday with a trip to Green Bay to take on the Phoenix at 1 pm from the Kress Center.
