Five-Setter Goes Other Way In Heartbreaker

Grabowski named to all-tournament team

KALAMAZOO, Mich.Kylie Wilks led all players with 19 kills but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee volleyball dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Utah State Saturday afternoon in their third and final match of the Delta Hotel By Marriott Kalamazoo Conference Center Tournament, hosted by Western Michigan.

Tied a 13-all in the decisive fifth set, MKE had a controversial call go against them in what proved to be a fatal blow in the very tight match, 25-20, 24-26, 25-17, 17-25, 15-13.

"This was a tough one to swallow, but there were a lot of positives to take away," head coach Susie Johnson said. "Kylie was very hungry today and was great with her attack, Jenna came in and was impactful, and Jess was named to the all-tournament team.

"Our focus was great today. Our team chemistry is really very strong and this team really cares about getting better. We all hate losing, but I was very encouraged by what I saw today. Our setters have been doing amazing – they're very versatile and doing whatever the team needs. We're playing tough opponents right now and the results haven't gone our way just yet."

Wilks led all players with 19 kills on the day – her most on the young season. Freshman Kleja Cerniauskaite also reached double-digits, tying her career high with 13.

Jenn Dore and Rylie Vaughn combined for 54 assists on the day in leading Milwaukee to a solid attack on the day.

Jess Grabowski had a career-high 32 digs as one of five Panthers on the day with 10-plus digs.

After four evenly matched sets, it all came down to the fifth.

Tied at 13-13, Milwaukee thought it had taken the lead after yet another strong swing by Wilks. Thinking the attack went off the Utah State blocker, the call went the other way and MKE suddenly found themselves facing match point. The Aggies were able sneak out one more point and steal the victory away from the Panthers.

MKE continues its month-long road swing next weekend with its final early-season tournament, playing three matches at Bradley starting Friday.
