Milwaukee Volleyball Sweeps Eastern Illinois

Panthers earn split of Friday’s action

PEORIA, Ill. – Sophomore Carmen Heilemann and freshman Abby Koenen both reached career highs in kills as the Milwaukee volleyball turned in a dominant showing Friday afternoon for a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Illinois in the second match of the CEFCU Classic at the Renaissance Coliseum, hosted by Bradley.

The win was especially impressive following a tough setback earlier in the day to Omaha. But Milwaukee showed no evidence of that in the matinee, putting together its most complete performance of the season for the 25-19, 25-18, 25-23 win.

"I'm very proud of this team right now," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "That was a tough match this morning and to turn around and play this well – I'm very proud. We had a lot of great energy. We pushed back every time they (Eastern Illinois) made a run. Our right side was excellent tonight. This level of talent has been there all season for us – tonight was just what it looks like when we can put together a complete match and continue to fight all the way."

Koenen led all players with a career-high 15 kills, while Heilemann made the most of her increased minutes with a career of her own with 13 kills on just 24 swings for a solid .417 clip. Freshman Kleja Cerniauskaite also did well, notching nine kills for the match to go with three blocks.

Rylie Vaughn and Jenn Dore continued to run a smooth offense, dishing out a combined 42 assists to go with 20 digs as each Panther tallied a double-double.

Jess Grabowski led MKE with 19 digs, while Kylie Wilks also notched double-digits with 13.

Milwaukee jumped out of the gates in their second match of the day to grab a quick 7-3 lead after an ace by Vaughn. Eastern Illinois battled back and was able to knot things up at 15-all, only to see MKE turn up the intensity and finishing the set on a 7-2 run – highlighted by two late blocks from Makenzie Mroczenski – for the solid start.

It was much of the same in the second. The Black & Gold jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead and always had a response for their opponent's attack. EIU cut the gap to 11-8 only to see MKE respond with a 6-1 run of their own to claim complete control. Wilks added another Panther ace and Heilemann closed things out with a big kill to put Milwaukee up 2-0.

The third was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team really able to establish a foothold on a lead until late. Eastern Illinois pulled ahead for a 20-17 edge late, only to see MKE respond in impressive fashion. Two straight kills from Koenen followed by a big swing from Cerniauskaite and it was all tied at 21. Tied at 23-23, Milwaukee turned to its hot hand in Heilemann and she didn't disappoint with back-to-back kills to lock up a big win for MKE.

Earlier in the day, the Panthers came up just short in a tight battle with a hot-hitting Omaha squad. The Mavericks turned in one of their best performances of the season to spoil Milwaukee's efforts in the opener.

Koenen once again led the MKE attack with 13 kills, while Louise Kiekhofer added a season-high 11 kills.

Milwaukee was impressive at the start, putting together a 9-1 run to jump all over Omaha before Kiekhofer closed out the opening frame with a pair of kills for the 25-19 win.

From there, however, the young Panthers just couldn't quite find the finishing touch the rest of the way against an experienced Omaha team, dropping three close sets, 21-25, 24-26, 21-25.

MKE will close out its final non-conference tournament of the season Saturday, taking on host Bradley at 2 pm.
