Panthers Fall On Opening Day At WMU Tournament

MKE back in action Saturday at 11:30 Central

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Milwaukee volleyball team dropped a pair of tightly contested matches Friday in the first day of the Delta Hotel By Marriott Kalamazoo Conference Center Tournament, hosted by Western Michigan.

After a very close 3-0 loss to the host Broncos bright at early to start the day, the Panthers turned around and improved but came up just short in a 3-1 loss to Canisius later in the day.

"Defensively we're digging the ball well and our setters are doing a really nice job." head coach Susie Johnson said. "Right now we need to focus on executing at the net. We have talent in that area. It just takes time to get that experience. We'll get right back out there tomorrow and continue to work."

After three close sets in the opener, MKE turned its attention to Canisius.

Against the Griffins, four different Panthers reached double figures in digs, led by freshman Lauren Spaulding with 14.

After a late run in the opening frame gave Canisius an early 1-0 lead, Milwaukee rallied in the second. A 5-0 run pushed the Panthers ahead 21-15 late, only to see the back-and-forth match continue to live up to its billing as the Griffs went back on top, 25-24. But MKE showed its fight. Carmen Heilemann tallied her first of the match, followed by finishing swings from Kylie Wilks and Kleja Cerniauskaite to even the match up at 1-1.

The match continued that way throughout, with neither team able to establish a lead. The two teams traded leads multiple times in the fourth, only to see Canisius squeak out a 25-23 win before closing out the match in the fourth.

Milwaukee will be right back in action Saturday at 11:30 am, going up against Utah State to close out its weekend action.
