High Flying Norse Outlast Panthers

Wilks tallies another double-double

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky matched a program record with its eighth straight win Saturday with a close 3-0 victory of the Milwaukee volleyball team from Regents Hall.

The Panthers – playing in their 12th straight match away from home that has spanned four weeks – bounced back from a slow start. They took NKU (10-3, 2-0 Horizon) to the brink in the second before forcing extras in the third, but Milwaukee never was able to get over the hump in the tight match, 17-25, 23-25, 24-26.

"We had a number of spots play very well today, but we weren't able to put together that complete match and it showed," head coach Susie Johnson said. "Our outsides have been playing well. We set the ball well. They (Northern Kentucky) were just really aggressive today and they were able to execute their plan and that was the difference."

Kylie Wilks notched her second consecutive double-double and the 22nd of her career with 14 digs and 12 kills – both team highs on the day.

One day after racking up a new career-high in kills, junior Louise Kiekhofer once again reached double figures with 11 kills on the day.

Rylie Vaughn dished out 21 assists on the day to go with seven digs, while Jenn Dore added another 11 assists.

Haley Libs – the two-time reigning Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week – led NKU with 14 kills and 11 digs Saturday.

After a slow start, the Panthers showed a great deal of fight in the second. Northern Kentucky went ahead 13-7, only to see Milwaukee go on an impressive run to tie things up at 17-all. The two teams battled back and forth from there, but the Norse were able to find a way at the end for the 25-23 win.

It was much of the same in third, featuring 13 ties and seven lead changes. A service ace from Jenna Miller put MKE up 10-8, and a kill from Miller stretch the lead to 18-14. NKU was able to close the gap and force the set into extras before sneaking out with a 26-24 win.

Milwaukee finally returns to its home court next weekend, starting with a 6 pm match on Friday against UIC from the Klotsche Center.
