Late Surge Not Enough For Milwaukee

DEKALB, Ill. – The Milwaukee volleyball improved in each set, forcing extras in the third but it wasn't enough as Northern Illinois claimed a 3-0 win Tuesday evening from Victor E. Court.

Jori Radtke and Meg Wolowicz had 12 kills apiece to lead the Huskies – who have won 19 or more matches in seven of the last eight years – to the 25-15, 25-16, 28-26 win.

"This was a challenging match for our young team," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We lost one of our starters early in the match with an injury in what was the first road environment for a number of our younger players. Despite that, we still got better as the match went along, and that is something that we can build on going forward."

After starting in a 7-1 hole to start the match, Milwaukee rallied. A kill by Shanon Volpis followed by a block from Volpis and Makenzie Mroczenski cut the gap to just three at 13-10. But, the Panthers could get no closer in the opening frame.

It was another slow start in the second, falling down 9-2 early. Coupled with an injury to starting their starting libero, and Milwaukee showed incredible fight in clawing back to 13-9 after back-to-back kills from Shari Volpis and Kleja Cerniauskaite, but NIU proved too much to take the 2-0 lead.

The Panthers flipped the script in the third and showed impressive resilience. Kylie Wilks had an early kill followed by a solo block to give MKE an early 6-2 edge. A back-and-forth battle the rest of the way saw this one head to extras. Cerniauskaite and Abby Koenen teamed up for a block to make it 26-all, but the Huskies were able to use their home crowd's energy to find two final points to claim the win.

Up next, the Panthers head west for three matches in a weekend tournament hosted by Idaho State, starting Friday.
