Panthers Suffer Heartbreaker At Hands Of Boise State

Comeback effort falls just short against perennial powerhouse

POCATELLO, Idaho – The Milwaukee volleyball team battled back from down 2-0 to force a decisive fifth set before falling just short, 3-2, to perennial power Boise State Friday afternoon in the first of three matches at the Idaho State Invitational.

Falling just short in the opening two sets, Milwaukee (0-5) showed tremendous fight and held a late lead in the fifth before coming up just short in extras, 21-25, 24-26, 24-22, 25-20, 14-16.

"Our team showed a lot of fight in that match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We fell down early, but we showed a ton of composure within that match to come back. Despite how young this team is, they were calm, composed and fought the whole way. We had a great game plan, the team executed it well and we just came up a little short against a very good team."

Sophomore Makenzie Mroczenski shattered her career high with 16 kills, hitting .382 with match-high eight blocks.

Freshman Kleja Cerniauskaite tallied double-digit kills for the first time in her young career, finishing with 10 to go with three blocks of her own. Newcomer Shanon Volpis also did well on the defensive side of the ball, adding another six blocks to help push Milwaukee's team total to 12 – already the second time reaching double-digits in that category this season.

Milwaukee's back row also turned in another strong defensive effort in Friday's opener, with five players recording 10-plus digs, with freshman Jess Grabowski leading the way with a career-high 27. Lauren Spaulding (15), Rylie Vaughn (13), Kylie Wilks and Jenn Dore (10 apiece) all also played big roles Friday.

Reigning First-Team All-Mountain West honoree Sabryn Roberts led the Broncos (3-0) with 21 kills despite Milwaukee's defensive efforts limiting her to just a .172 hitting clip.

After dropping the first two sets in close fashion, the Panthers pushed back.

MKE got its offense going and hit .244 in the third while limiting BSU to just .095 to force a fourth set. There, Milwaukee limited the Broncos to just an .043 attack to claim a 25-20 set win and force a fifth.

Playing in their first five-setter of the season, the young Panthers fell down 7-1 early, only to roar back and take a 13-12 lead late. But, Boise State – which has won 20-plus matches two of the last three years and advanced to the postseason last year – was able to find a way late for the win in extras.

It's a quick turnaround for Milwaukee, as they take on UC Riverside at 6 pm Central to finish up day one of the Idaho State tournament.
