MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee baseball team won in dramatic fashion defeating Oakland 15-9 after an epic 11-run seventh inning Friday evening from Henry Aaron Field.
Trialing six runs after the first two innings, Milwaukee (23-26, 12-12) showcased their patience and power in the sixth and seventh innings in defeating Oakland (15-30, 12-13) by a final score of 15-9.
"Oakland put up a five spot in the first inning and that can be pretty demoralizing, but I liked how we chipped away at the game so you have to give our guys a lot of credit in staying in it," said Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek. "Up and down the lineup we put up some really good at-bats when we saw (Nick) Parr the second time around."
The Golden Grizzlies plated six runs on five runs in the first two innings, but when
Alex Fischer came into relief in the second, the Golden Grizzlies put up zeroes in the run column. In 4.1 innings, Fischer held the Golden Grizzlies scoreless, hitless and struck out five.
"I give (Alex) Fischer a lot of credit," said Doffek. "His command wasn't the absolute best in allowing four walks, but held them hitless to keep us in the ball game."
The massive comeback began in the sixth inning when
Colin Kreiter and
Mike Ferri reached base with a single and double. After
Matt Quartel advanced the runners 90 feet with a ground ball to second, senior
Ben Chally homered to center – his fourth of the season. After the three-run sixth, and a run in the second, the Panthers inched their way back into the game trailing 6-4.
Oakland answered back swiftly with two runs on two hits in the top of the seventh inning to put the team up by four runs, but Milwaukee would end up having an inning of their own.
The 11-run inning begane when
Colin Kreiter hit a no-doubter over the left field fence scoring
Trevor Schwecke to get the Panthers back within two. From there, the Panther lineup was patient drawing three walks and four hit by pitch. Once
Ben Chally and Mastt Quartel walked to load the bases, four runs would cross the plate without the Panthers getting a bat on the ball. In that time, Oakland hit three-straight Panthers before Schwecke doubled again his second time around to put MKE up 12-8.
Just like Schwecke, Kreiter replicated his results from the beginning of the inning, only this time hitting a three-run homerun capping off the historic 11-run inning.
The Golden Grizzlies managed a run in their last chance at-bats in the top of the ninth, but the rally ended there as
George Swedie sat down the next three batters and hang on to a 15-9 win.
The Panthers will be back in action Sat., May 19 for the final game of the series against Oakland beginning at 12 p.m. MKE will also celebrate it's four seniors,
Ben Chally,
Brandon Parr,
John Moynihan and
Austin Schulfer in what will be their last regular season game at Henry Aaron Field.
