MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Austin Schulfer tied the career strikeout record with seven strikeouts this afternoon for a total of 239, but the Milwaukee baseball team fell short of a victory to the Golden Grizzlies by a score of 4-2 Thursday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.
Milwaukee (22-26, 11-12) held a 2-0 lead going into the seventh inning, but a two out walk and a couple seeing eye singles led to a three run inning for the Golden Grizzlies (15-29, 12-12) who hung on to win, 4-2.
"We let the seventh inning get away from us," said head coach
Scott Doffek. "The walk and the couple of hits that fell in ended up being the difference of the game."
The Panthers jumped out on top right away in the first inning when
Colin Kreiter hit a sacrifice fly to left center, scoring
Devin Rybacki. Rybacki began the inning with a single to right field and eventually advanced to third after back-to-back miscues from the Golden Grizzlies.
Sophomore
Mike Ferri has provided some pop in Panther lineup as of late and hit his third homerun of the season in the second inning. The leadoff, solo shot put MKE up 2-0 after two innings of play.
From the second inning on, the pitchers on both sides scattered a hit here and there keeping the game close.
It was in the sixth inning when Oakland scored their first run when Mario Camilletti hit a two out double to right center, scoring Ryan Fitzgerald to split the score in half, 2-1.
Senior
Austin Schulfer pitched a solid six innings in the no decision giving up one run on four hits, while striking out seven before exiting.
"I thought Austin was great today," Doffek said. "We knew going into it he was going to be on a short pitch count, and he did what he needed to do to give us a chance."
Oakland hit into two quick oust but did all of their damage after two in the seventh. After a Jordan Jackson walk, the Golden Grizzlies strung together two hits to take the lead, 3-2. By the end of the inning, Oakland tacked on another run extending its lead, 4-2.
Milwaukee had limited chances for a comeback, but had some hope in the bottom of the ninth when
Mike Ferri led off with a walk. The walk was the only miscue for Oakland's Nate Schweers as he sat the next three batters down earning the save.
The Panthers will look to rebound tomorrow, May 18 as the Panthers and Golden Grizzlies are back it from Henry Aaron Field with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
