CHICAGO, Ill. – The Milwaukee baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader with UIC Saturday afternoon 5-0 and 4-0 from Granderson Stadium.
Hits came at a premium for the Panthers (16-21, 9-8) while the Windy City displayed such elements in today's games in addition to a solid pitching from the UIC (22-14, 10-7) pitching staff. Milwaukee held the Flames for a combined nine runs, but were shutout both games and managed just seven hits on the day.
"It was a tough day to hit with conditions that we had today," said Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek. "And UIC displayed some good pitching and defense."
UIC's Ryan Campbell (6-2) led the Flames to a 5-0 win to start the day. Coming in with an overall 1.65 ERA, Campbell held the Panthers to four hits in a complete game shutout.
Milwaukee's best chance to score came in the eighth inning when
Tyler Bordner and
Colin Kreiter began the inning with back-to-back singles. After that, Bordner and Kreiter were left stranded as the Panthers hit into three consecutive outs without scoring.
Panthers'
Austin Schulfer (4-5) scattered eight hits and notched three strikeouts in six innings of work.
Game two was nearly identical to the first with UIC's pitcher Charlie Cerny picking up the victory for the Flames striking out eight in a three hit, complete game.
Jake Sommers (3-7) also had a solid outing for the Panthers on the mound, but received the loss in seven and two-thirds innings while giving up four runs on nine hits.
"Austin and Jake were very good on the mound as well," said Doffek. "We just didn't defend or grind through our at-bats as well as they did."
UIC was held scoreless until late in the game where they put up runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings for a total of four runs.
The Panthers and Flames will square off at 1 p.m. tomorrow in the series finale.
