MILWAUKEE, Wis. – As the last Division I baseball team to host a home game, the Milwaukee baseball team finally played its home opener at Henry Aaron field with 5-2 win over MSOE Thursday evening.
The Panthers (16-19) were bested in the hits category by MSOE (17-15), 10-8, but solid pitching from
Alex McIntosh (1-0) and
Mike Edwards and a four run second inning helped Milwaukee garner a W.
The Raiders started with back-to-back singles before the Panthers notched their 19
th double play of the season with Jimmy Carrington hitting into a 6-4-3 double play. A single the following at-bat gave MSOE an early 1-0 lead but that's all the Raiders would get as McIntosh struck out Owen Burnikel in three straight pitches.
In the fourth, Milwaukee hit into two quick outs before
Colin Kreiter and
Oakland Scanlan reached base on two singles. Freshman
Joey Scaffidi started his first collegiate game and in his first at-bat of the game, he hit his first collegiate homerun to deep right center off the scoreboard giving the Panthers a 4-1 lead.
From the second inning on, MSOE would gather just one run as McIntosh settled on the mound nicely for the Panthers. McIntosh ended the game with a 5 IP, six hit, six strikeout stat line – good enough for his first win of the season.
With a 5-2 lead in the ninth inning, MSOE threatened to tie the game with runners at first and third, but freshman
Mike Edwards finished the game with a strikeout and ground out for the save. Edwards scattered four hits in four innings of work while striking out five Raiders.
Up next, MKE returns to Horizon League play this weekend against UIC. With projected rain Fri., April 27, the series schedule has changed to doubleheader beginning Sat., April 28 at 12 p.m. at Granderson Stadium in Chicago. Game three will be played the following day with a game time of 1 p.m.
