YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Nice weather and solid pitching highlighted the Milwaukee baseball's team game with Youngstown State Sunday afternoon at Eastwood Field. The Panthers came out on top in the final game of the series 5-2 earning a series sweep over the Penguins.
Milwaukee (15-18, 9-6) carried off right where they left off after yesterday's doubleheader with an all-around solid performance from top to bottom. While the offense pounded out 15 hits, the Panthers utilized five pitchers to keep the Penguin (10-26, 7-10) lineup at bay. The pitching staff allowed just two runs while scattering seven hits.
"I can't say enough about the energy and effort the guys played with all weekend," said Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek. "It was an adverse situation having to come here for our home games, but the guys didn't feel sorry for themselves and played with passion."
Youngstown State got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second, but the Panthers answered back with one of their own. After a Panther fly out, Milwaukee hit three consecutive singles with
Zach Nogalski hitting
Colin Kreiter in for the RBI.
The Panthers threatened to score again with zero outs and bases loaded the following inning, but the offense stalled with three straight outs resulting in null inning. Milwaukee would go on to leave 12 runners left on base for the game.
"We certainly need to do a better job of executing some situational things on the bases and in the box," said Doffek. "We left a lot of runs out there, but we did get some big two out hits."
One time through the lineup, the Penguins brought in Alex Bellardini after Zach Lopatka gave up seven hits. The Panthers welcomed the change scoring three runs on four hits. Milwaukee started off the inning with a walk and back-to-back singles from
Devin Rybacki and
Mike Ferri.
Trevor Schwecke knocked in his 21
st RBI of the season with a sac fly to right field. Two more singles gave MKE a 4-1 lead by the end of the inning.
In the fifth, the teams exchanged runs, but Milwaukee remained on top 5-2 which was enough for the Panther bullpen.
Youngstown State threatened to score in the eighth with two Penguin singles, but
Patrick Tomfohrde shut down any hopes of a comeback ending the inning with a strikeout. From the sixth inning on, the Milwaukee bullpen allowed just three hits and secured a 5-2 victory with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
MKE will be back in action on Wed., April 25 against another Big Ten opponent in Iowa. This will mark the 33
rd straight game the Panthers have been on the road before playing at home. First pitch between the Panthers and Hawkeyes is set for 6 p.m.
