DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A pair of pitchers combined on a shutout to lead Bethune-Cookman to a 6-0 victory over the Milwaukee baseball team Saturday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Park.
Â
The Panthers (1-5) got a great effort out of their bullpen, but could never get the offense going against the Wildcats (3-4).
Â
Anthony Maldonado, the MEAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, worked into the sixth inning, walking no one and striking out eight. Brandon Wilkes finished it off with a scoreless 3.2 innings.
Â
"I thought their kid was just outstanding today," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "He really had a good three-pitch mix and pounded the bottom half. You can see why he's the pitcher of the year."
Â
Lost in the final score was a brilliant job by the Milwaukee bullpen, which came in to record six scoreless frames.
Â
George Swedie was terrific, allowing just one hit in his 3.0 innings of scoreless work. He walked one and struck out two.
Â
Alex Fischer worked a scoreless inning, as did
Joshua Serio, who struck out two in his UWM debut.
Â
"It was great to see some positives out of the bullpen today," Doffek said. "All three of our guys were sharp. We are looking forward to putting together a complete game tomorrow and getting this thing going in a good direction."
Â
B-CU got on the board in the first and put up a five-spot in the third to wrap up all of the scoring on the day. The Panthers two hits came from
Colin Kreiter and
Ben Chally.
Â
The series concludes Sunday in Florida, set for a 10 a.m. CST start back in Milwaukee.
