DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Milwaukee baseball team scored five runs in the first inning to jumpstart a 15-4 victory over Bethune-Cookman Sunday morning at Jackie Robinson Park.
Â
The Panthers (2-5) went on to build the lead against the Wildcats (3-5) to 7-0 by the fourth inning to propel them to victory.
Â
Oakland Scanlon belted a three-run home run to highlight the early uprising.
Â
"It was a great team effort today," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We swung the bats well up-and-down the lineup and it was great to see some guys bust out a little."
Â
The offense broke out in a big way, setting season highs for runs (15) and hits (19) while the bullpen was in fine form again, with four pitchers getting the job done.
Â
"The key to this game was the bullpen," Doffek said. "
Matt Vanek went down with an arm issue the second batter of the game and
Patrick Tomfohrde did a great coming in and pounding the zone.Â
Alex Fischer was outstanding again today and
Clayton Uselman did a great job as well."
Â
Scanlon set the tone in the first and ended up with a 3-for-6 day, scoring twice and driving in four runs. He was joined by
Colin Kreiter (3-for-4, 2 runs) and
Ben Chally (3-for-5, 3 runs) with three-hit efforts.
Â
Mike Ferri hit the first home run of his collegiate career, one of two hits on the day, adding an exclamation to the offensive outpouring with a three-run shot in the eighth inning.
Â
It didn't stop there.
Trevor Schwecke was 2-for-4 with two runs scored,
Tyler Bordner went 2-for-4 and
Matt Quartel ripped a pair of triples and drove in three.
Devin Rybacki also added a clutch two-out, two-strike single to right field to make it 9-3 in the sixth inning.
Â
Freshman
Patrick Tomfohrde put in a great effort on short notice, working the first four innings after
Matt Vanek left in the top of the first with an injury. Tomfohrde struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Â
Alex Fischer (1-0) picked up the win in relief, allowing just one hit in a pair of scoreless frames. He struck out three and walked no one.
Clayton Uselman added a clean inning and
Brandon Parr worked the ninth.
Â
The Panthers make the return trip to Wisconsin and then prepare for their next road trip, heading to Washington to take on Gonzaga this weekend. The series gets underway Friday, set for an 8 p.m. CST first pitch.
