DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Milwaukee baseball team was undone by fielding miscues and a big eighth-inning in falling to Bethune-Cookman Friday night by a final score of 17-4 at Jackie Robinson Park.
Â
The Panthers (1-4) started well, jumping ahead of the Wildcats (2-4) on a home run by
Ben Chally in the first inning. Unfortunately, it was also the only lead they would hold all night.
Â
After making just four errors over its first four games, the Milwaukee defense committed an uncharacteristic six in helping B-CU claim the victory.
Â
The Wildcats tied the game in the second inning on an unearned tally in building a 4-1 lead.
Trevor Schwecke knocked in a run with an RBI-double in the fifth inning to get UWM within a pair at 4-2, but that is as close as it would get.
Â
After giving up the first-inning run, Bethune Cookman starter Tyler Norris (1-1) really settled in. He allowed just three hits in his 6.0 innings of work, walking three and striking out six.
Â
The Panthers totaled only four hits on the night, with
Oakland Scanlon (1-2, BB) recording one and
Zach Nogalski the other – his coming on a two-run shot in the top of the ninth inning.
Â
Mike Ferri was 0-for-1, but was on base three times with walks.
Â
B-CU was led by Adonis Lao (3-for-5, 3 RBI) and Giovamy Lorenzo (2 hits/3 RBI).
Â
Austin Schulfer (0-1) allowed six runs, just three earned, in 4.2 innings, recording three strikeouts.
Â
Game two of the series is set for 12 p.m. CST Saturday.
