Third-Quarter Eruption Sparks Panther Road Win

Kostowicz finishes with 10 points and 17 rebounds

CLEVELAND – The Milwaukee women's basketball team erupted for 31 third-quarter points to flip a 10-point halftime deficit into a 69-63 win over Cleveland State Saturday afternoon from the Wolstein Center.

UWM (18-9, 9-6 Horizon) started the third quarter making its first 10 shots, including going 5-for-5 from behind the arc. Jenny Lindner did the majority of the damage in that frame, with 16 of her team-high 24 points coming during that decisive third-quarter run.

The win was a big one for the Panthers, snapping a three-game skid and taking down a CSU (18-9, 10-6 Horizon) team that had won six of its last seven, including an 11-point win over No. 19 Green Bay.

"It feels good to get back to our winning ways to have a team that is playing a little bit more consistent, especially in the second half," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I am really impressed with how we came out from the locker room (after halftime). It was one of those talks (at halftime) where I just talked to them about how we are so much better than how we were playing.

"I knew –  with our seniors and how they were feeling about this season and how they really want to win – that they would motivate the team."

Lindner finished with a team-high 24 points, headlined by a season-high four made three pointers. The senior also had seven rebounds and two steals.

Steph Kostowicz finished with 10 points, a season-high 17 rebounds and six assists. That marks the 30th double-double of her career, with her rebound total equaling the fourth most by a Horizon League player this season.

Jamie Reit kept Milwaukee in the game early, scoring 10 points in the first half and finishing with 16 to go with six rebounds and three assists.

Bailey Farley once again reached double-digit scoring with 10 points.

McKaela Schmelzer finished with four points, four rebounds and five assists, while Kelsey Cunningham came off the bench for five points and a steal in 12 minutes.

Seniors Khayla Livingston and Olivia Voskuhl led the Vikings with a combined 39 points and 14 rebounds in CSU's final home game of the year.

After a slow first-half for Milwaukee that saw them trail 29-19 at the half, everything quickly changed in the third.

Kostowicz opened the frame with a block on the defensive end and then a quick jumper. Lindner followed up with a three on the next possession and just like that it was 29-24. After a CSU basket, Farley got in on the action with a three-pointer followed by another triple from Lindner and the comeback was on.

Schmelzer's three from the left corner with 5:08 left in the third tied things up at 35-all and Reit's jumper on the next possession gave Milwaukee its first lead in the second half – one they would never relinquish.

The lead stretched all the way to 10 after a pair of free throws from Farley late in the period and Milwaukee carried a 50-42 lead into the fourth after a dominating 10 minutes of play.

"The biggest thing about the second half is just that our intensity and aggressiveness picked up," Rechlicz said. "I talked to them in the locker room about who we want to be and that mentality, and then I left. I told them that they needed to figure it out, so I let them have those few minutes to decide what team they wanted to be when they came out in the second half and I think we hit our first 10 shots.

"It was definitely sparked by Jenny (Lindner) at the start. She hit a couple threes – one of them was pretty deep. She just kind of took it upon herself to get the scoring run going, but everybody got in the mix."

Cunningham opened the fourth with a three from the top of the key, followed by another triple from Farley for a 56-42 edge.

Milwaukee's still led by 14 with 2:46 to play, before a furious comeback effort by the home squad. The Vikings 12-1 run to cut the score to 66-63 with just 14 seconds left. Lindner sunk both of her free throws on the ensuing possession to erase any thoughts of a heartbreaker in this one.

Saturday's win marks the fourth straight time the Panthers have trailed Cleveland State by double digits and come back to win, and the seventh consecutive win in the overall series. It also marks the 11th win away from home this season, tying the 2001-02 team for the most wins away from home in a single season in the program's Division I history.

UWM will look to add to that total when they wrap up their current three-game road trip Monday, heading to IUPUI for a 6pm Central contest from The Jungle.
