Streaking Penguins Sneak Past Panthers In Overtime

Kostowicz pours in season-high 28 points

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Going up against the hottest team in the Horizon League, the Milwaukee women's basketball team fell one-point shy in an 86-85 overtime against Youngstown State Thursday evening from the Beeghly Center.

Thursday's game went back-and-forth all night long, featuring 17 lead changes and eight ties.

The Panthers (17-9, 8-6 Horizon) – who beat YSU by one at the buzzer one month ago in Milwaukee – hit a season-high 11 threes of their own before turning to Steph Kostowicz. The senior poured in a season-high 28 points, with 23 coming after halftime.

The Penguins (13-13, 9-6 Horizon) notched their fifth-straight win by hitting 12 three pointers before getting to the free-throw line for eight of the 12 overtime points.

"Hats off to Youngstown State. It's been a battle both times we've played them this year," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We fouled too much down the stretch…but I thought we played really hard. I am definitely really proud of our team for the effort that they gave in the first game on this road swing."

Jenny Lindner finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for her 19th career double-double in a season-high 40 minutes.

Brandi Bisping had a big performance off the bench, tallying her first career double-double with career highs in both points (10) and rebounds (11) before fouling out in overtime.

Bailey Farley also finished in double figures with 13 points to go with three rebounds and three assists in a career-high 39 minutes.

Milwaukee had a chance at the end of regulation. After the Penguins tied things up at 74-all with 8.3 seconds left in the fourth, UWM drew up their play out of a timeout. Lindner got the ball in the post, spun past one defender and got her contested shot off only to see it rim out to send the game to overtime.

YSU got to the free-throw line early and often in the extra period, going 8-for-10 from the charity stripe over the final five minutes, accounting for all but four of their final 12 points.

After a baseline jumper to beat the shot clock with 5.1 seconds left gave YSU an 86-82 lead, Milwaukee didn't quit. Farley drilled a deep three to close the gap to one with 2.2 seconds left. But, the Penguins were able to dribble out the final seconds to escape with the win.

The game started at a frenetic pace, with the two teams combining for 13 made three-pointers in the first half alone after hitting a combined nine back in Milwaukee just one month ago.

Eight different Panthers scored in Thursday's game, with Milwaukee finishing with a 38-28 edge in points in the paint and a 42-30 advantage in rebounding.

Milwaukee now will head to Cleveland State – which just upset No. 19/15 Green Bay, 71-60 – for a Saturday contest at the Wolstein Center.
