Panthers Push Phoenix To The Brink

Dore finishes with 30 assists on the night

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Green Bay's Taylor Wolf tallied a career-high 29 kills to lead the Phoenix to a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee volleyball team Friday night in the season finale for MKE.

Already with a postseason berth in hand, the Panthers gave the league-leading Phoenix (17-10, 12-3 Horizon) all they could handle before coming up just short in the fifth set to finish the regular season with a 7-9 league record.

"This one is tough. When you look at the score sheet – we lost. But we really came to play after a rough day yesterday and we took the top team in our conference right to the edge," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Obviously, the goal is to win. But we really battled and made them (Green Bay) work 100-percent for this match.

"Each match is a learning experience for this young team. We just need to put together all of these experiences as we head into next week's tournament."

Jenn Dore dished out 30 assists to go with nine digs, while freshman Rylie Vaughn added another 17 assists and 15 digs for her 12th double-double of the season.

Carmen Heilemann led Milwaukee with 18 kills on the night. Abby Koenen added another 12, Shanon Volpis 11 and Kylie Wilks 10. Wilks also registered 14 digs for her 28th career double-double.

Defensively, Jess Grabowski notched 20 digs to lead the way, with Kailynn Mongan also reaching double digits with 11.

After dropping the first, MKE bounced back for a big win in the second. Tied at 23, the Panthers finished strong with a kill by Wilks before forcing a side out to even things up, 1-1.

Milwaukee then went ahead 2-1, after emphatically claiming the third set. A kill by Koenen made it 18-13, before Shari Volpis got in on the action with a kill to put MKE ahead, 22-17. Wilks eventually would close things out for the 25-19 winner.

The Panthers battled extremely hard in the final two frames, but never could find that finishing blow as Green Bay went home with the home win to give them sole possession of first place in the league standings heading into Saturday's final day of action.

MKE will now await the Saturday's results to determine where they sit in the final league standings for next weekend's Horizon League Tournament, hosted by the regular season champion.
