Panthers Close Season At League Tournament

Milwaukee falls short of upset in opening round

GREEN BAY – All-Horizon League honoree Kiera James finished with a match-high 15 kills as UIC handed the Milwaukee volleyball team a 3-0 loss Friday in the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals from the Kress Center.

Just like they have all season, MKE battled hard but couldn't pull off the opening round upset in closing out their season.

"UIC played very well tonight. Congratulations to them on advancing," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "I'm very proud of what this team was able to do this year. Our record doesn't show just how far we've come. This team has been coachable all season long and they've been such great teammates. They've been a positive influence on the program and I'm already looking forward to what we can accomplish next year."

First-Team All-Horizon League honoree Carmen Heilemann led Milwaukee in a very balanced attack Friday, finishing with seven kills. Freshman Abby Koenen finished with six, while Kleja Cerniauskaite, Kylie Wilks, Shanon Volpis and Shari Volpis each added five.

Jenn Dore dished out 20 assists on the night, with newcomer Rylie Vaughn adding another 10.

Freshman Jess Grabowski tallied a team-high 15 digs on the night, finalizing her freshman-record total at 561 on the year.

A close game early in the first, UIC used a 7-1 run to establish the first advantage of the night. The Panthers would try to claw back, using a 4-0 run of their own to make it 21-17, but could get no close in dropping the opener, 25-18.

After a similar second set, the Panthers looked to get on the board in the third. Down 20-16, Shanon Volpis got the rally started with a kill. Heilemann followed up with a kill of her own, before teaming up with Volpis for a big block. Wilks added a kill and suddenly things were tied up at 20-all. Shari Volpis added another kill to give MKE the lead at 22-21, but UIC was able to bounce back after a timeout and finish the set on a 4-1 run to complete the sweep.

The Panthers finish the season at 8-22, while UIC improves to 18-12 overall and will advance to take on regular-season champion Green Bay Saturday.
