Flames Too Much For Milwaukee On Thursday

Cerniauskaite led MKE with 10 kills

CHICAGO – The Milwaukee volleyball team nearly pulled off a pair of impressive comebacks in falling just short to UIC Thursday evening, 3-0, from the Flames Athletic Center.

With the loss, the Panthers – who have already qualified for next week's Horizon League Tournament – dip to 7-8 in the Horizon League, while UIC improves to 10-5 in league play.

Freshman Kleja Cerniauskaite led Milwaukee with 10 kills on the day – the second consecutive double-digit kill performance for the newcomer.

Ali Witt paced the Flames with 12 kills, while hitting a match-high .455 on the day.

After falling behind 6-0 and 9-2 in the opening frame, Milwaukee never quit. The Panthers slowly chipped away at the deficit, closing to 13-10 after a 3-0 run to force a Flames timeout. MKE then went on a 5-0 run – with three kills and one block in that span coming from Cerniauskaite – to take its first lead at 17-16. It was back and forth the rest of the way, but UIC did just enough late to squeak out the opening win.

The second set was awfully similar to the first. MKE once again fell down early at 9-3 before making a strong comeback effort. A block by Jenna Miller and Abby Koenen closed things to 10-7, and back-to-back kills from Miller made cut the gap to just two at 22-20. After a Flames timeout, the home squad was able to regroup just enough to go ahead with the 2-0 lead.

Milwaukee never quite got on track in the third, with UIC hitting .424 in the frame to complete the evening sweep.

The Panthers will close out their regular season Friday at 7 pm with the short trip north to take on in-state rival Green Bay.
