Upset Bid Falls Just Short For MKE At Indiana

Reit ties career high with 21 points to lead all players

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.Jamie Reit tied her career high with a game-high 21 points to lead the Milwaukee women's basketball team in a near upset at Indiana, coming up just short in a 68-66 contest in the season opener from Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall Wednesday.

In a rematch of last season's Postseason WNIT Second Round matchup, Milwaukee went back and forth with Indiana the whole way. The Panthers had one last shot, down by two and coming out of a timeout with just 1.2 left on the clock but couldn't convert to fall to 0-1 on the young season.

"For our first outing as a group – and a really young group, at that – I thought we really competed from start to finish," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We had a few lulls in the game and some things we need to work on, but all-in-all, we laid it out there heart-wise.

"From 1-to-15, we had people bought in, and that's what I'm most proud of. When we go back and watch film, we can work on the things that we're missing, but you can't fix the intangibles – you can't fix the heart. I was really proud of the effort…and they came out and played with everything that they had."

In a game that saw 14 lead changes, Indiana was able to grab the largest lead of the night by either team with a 63-54 edge with just 4:40 left on the clock.

Despite graduating one of the most decorated classes in program history a season ago, this young Panther squad didn't blink.

Lizzie Odegard started things off with a deep three from the top of the key to trim the deficit to six. Brandi Bisping earned a trip to the line and converted both free throws before a mid-range jumper from Sydney Staver and just like that MKE was within two in just 1:16 of action. Bisping hit two more free throws to tie things up at 63-all with 2:12 left.

After a Hoosier basket to go back up two, Reit hit her fourth triple of the night to give Milwaukee a 66-65 lead with 1:36 to play.

Junior transfer Brenne Wise's jumper just beat the shot clock on IU's next possession to put the home team back up by one.

Milwaukee had a number of good looks the next time down the court, but the ball just wouldn't fall, as IU hit one final free throw with 1.2 left to close out the scoring.

Reit led all players with 21 points to tie her career high on 8-13 shooting. Megan Walstad finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists before fouling out late. Bisping also reached double figures in the scoring column with 10 points to go with five rebounds.

Lizzie Odegard had nine big points off the bench, while Ryaen Johnson was a noticeable spark for MKE all night – chipping in with four points, four rebounds, four assists and a pair of blocks in 15 minutes.

Wise and fellow transfer Ali Patberg led the Hoosiers with a combined 33 points in their first official games for Indiana.

Milwaukee now gets set for its home opener on Tuesday when Wisconsin comes to the Klotsche Center for a 7 pm contest. That game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Wisconsin, as MKE will look to make it three straight over their in-state rivals. The first 400 fans will receive a "Defend MKE" Panther t-shirt.
