Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hot Start Not Enough For Milwaukee

Badgers snap Panthers win streak

MILWAUKEESydney Levy finished with a team-high 11 points but the Milwaukee women's basketball team couldn't overcome a cold shooting night in a 68-57 loss to Wisconsin Tuesday night from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (0-2) opened the game on fire, connecting on six three-pointers in the opening quarter and finishing shooting 7-14 overall in the opening frame, but would finish the game shooting 20-61 (.328) to halt their win streak over their in-state rivals.

"For some reason, we didn't play our game tonight," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "Outside of the first nine minutes or so of this game, we didn't play aggressive enough. We started strong and then they (Wisconsin) had a player go down, and I thought we would come out from that and attack but we seemed to play scared.

"I give a lot of credit to Akaylah Hayes. She really came off the bench and pushed things for us down the stretch, but it was just too much to overcome at that point."

Levy led MKE with 11 points on the night. Jamie Reit added nine, followed by eight points apiece from both Lizzie Odegard and Hayes – with Hayes' total equaling a new career high.

Senior Marsha Howard led Wisconsin (2-0) with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in as many games.

Milwaukee opened up the game shooting absolutely lights out. Bre Cera started things with a triple just 13 seconds into the game, with McKaela Schmelzer – playing her first basketball game of the season after finishing up her soccer season NCAA Tournament last Saturday – showed no rust with an early triple herself. Reit added another three-ball to make it 11-8 and Ryaen Johnson's first career three-pointer at the 3:50 mark to make it 18-13 Panthers.

Lizzie Odegard hit back-to-back three's and Milwaukee finished the opening frame with a 24-15 edge after hitting on 6-of-10 from behind the arc.

But, from just one quarter to the next, the Panthers went from red hot to ice cold. MKE would make just one field goal the entire second quarter to trail, 30-28 at the break.

The cold shooting carried over into the third, where Milwaukee trailed 53-33 before finally getting shots to fall their way again. Hayes started it with a drive to the bucket before Levy's second career three came on a three with 19 seconds left in the frame.

Hayes opened the fourth with another strong move to the basket, followed by back-to-back triples from Levy and a lay in by Cera to cut the gap to 11 with 7:49 to play. The Panthers would stay close the rest of the way, but never could inch any closer in Tuesday's home opener.

MKE finished the game shooting 32.8 percent overall, compared to Wisconsin's 41.7-percent performance. The Panthers were whistled for 24 fouls in the game, leading to a 13-27 night from the free-throw line by the Badgers.

The Panthers close out their brief two-game homestand Friday by taking on Columbia at 7 pm from the Klotsche Center.
