Panthers Clinch Postseason Berth Sunday

Team comes up just short of upset of Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Milwaukee volleyball team came up just short in an upset bid of league-leading Cleveland State Sunday afternoon in a 3-1 loss from Woodling Gymnasium.

The Panthers (8-19, 7-7 Horizon) took the Vikings (17-9, 11-3 Horizon) to the brink before falling just short down the stretch, 29-31, 25-23, 22-25, 16-25.

Despite the loss, MKE clinched a spot in the Horizon League Tournament due to other results around the conference.

"We put up a great fight today against one of the top teams in our conference," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We had a number of great individual performances. Defensively, I thought we worked really, really hard. We just came up a little short."

Despite their youth, Milwaukee came out and showed they weren't afraid of the league leaders. Down 14-10 in the first, the Panthers responded in a big way with a 9-2 run, capped by a service ace by Shanon Volpis to put her team ahead, 19-16. It was neck-and-neck the rest of the way, going deep into extras before CSU was able to just find a way late for the 31-29 win.

MKE bounced back by claiming the second set. Up 23-18 late, the Vikings would rally, but freshman Kleja Cerniauskaite would end any thoughts of a comeback with the late winner to tie things up.

It was another close affair in the third, but a late run by the Vikings gave them the 2-1 lead, before sealing the win in the fourth.

Carmen Heilemann continued her run of strong play with a match-high 18 kills. Abby Koenen added another 12, Cerniauskaite 11 and Kylie Wilks 10.

Jess Grabowski had a match-high 25 digs. Kailynn Mongan, Rylie Vaughn and Wilks all added 15 as the Panthers racked up 89 in the four setter.

Vaughn joined Wilks with a double-double of her own with 26 assists on the day, while Jenn Dore dished out 30 assists.

The Panthers close out the regular season this coming week with a pair of matches on the road, starting Thursday with a 6 pm match at UIC.
